Michael Shannon to Star in New Adaptation of Doctor Caligari

The Dowdle Brothers are reimagining the horror classic “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” with Michael Shannon set to star as the titular villain, Doctor Caligari. Directed by John Erick Dowdle from his own screenplay, the film follows Caligari, a mesmerist linked to a series of grisly murders, as a young woman suspects him in her boyfriend’s disappearance but struggles to convince others. The original 1920 German silent film is regarded as the first true horror movie and a key influence on film noir. Principal photography is set to begin in June 2026.
