Memorials held across Asia to mark 20 years of devastating tsunami

Memorials were held for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed over 200,000 people in 14 countries. Indonesia’s Aceh province, where more than 100,000 people died, held ceremonies at the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque and Ulee Lheue mass grave. The disaster prompted improved tsunami warning systems, with Indonesia suffering the highest death toll and Sri Lanka commemorating victims of a derailed train.
