A 69-year-old man in eastern Melbourne died while waiting four hours for an ambulance, as a spike in sick leave left at least 50 crews off the roads. Ambulance Victoria is investigating the incident, with the paramedics’ union attributing the shortage to overwork leading to burnt-out and exhausted staff, leaving Melbourne short 30 ambulances and some towns up to 100 kilometers away from their closest response units.
