McDonald’s adds protein labels to 17 menu items on app and kiosks

McDonald’s is launching “protein callouts” for over a dozen menu items in its app and kiosks, aimed at helping customers easily identify high-protein options. The fast-food chain announced this initiative to assist customers in aligning their meal choices with their protein intake goals. Starting April 21, these visual “badges” will highlight 17 items across breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including classics like the Egg McMuffin (17 grams of protein) and Chicken McNuggets (23 grams). While the app and kiosks will feature these badges, physical menus will remain unchanged. This move responds to the increasing consumer demand for protein-rich food options, which has been gaining popularity in the fast-food sector.

Why It Matters

The introduction of protein callouts reflects a growing trend in the food industry, where high-protein diets have become more mainstream. As consumers increasingly prioritize protein intake for health and fitness reasons, fast-food chains like McDonald’s are adapting their menus to meet this demand. This trend has also influenced other brands, such as Shake Shack, which recently introduced a “Good Fit” menu focusing on high-protein, low-carb options. The rise of protein-centric offerings aligns with broader dietary shifts, including increased consumer interest in nutritional transparency and healthier eating habits.
