Too Good To Go app assists cafes in reducing food waste and costs

Ayla Purves, the owner of Sweet Beans cafe in Tamahere, Waikato, has taken steps to reduce food waste after six months of operating her business. She discovered a food rescue app called Too Good To Go, which enables users to purchase discounted unsold food from bakeries, cafes, restaurants, and supermarkets. This app has recently launched in Hamilton as part of its nationwide rollout in New Zealand, where it has already helped save over 77,000 meals since October. Users can buy “surprise bags” of food, often for as little as $8, to collect at designated times. Annually, approximately $3 billion worth of food is wasted in New Zealand, highlighting the ongoing challenge of food waste management.

Why It Matters

Food waste is a significant issue globally, with New Zealand accounting for around $3 billion in wasted food each year. The Too Good To Go app addresses this problem by connecting consumers with businesses that have surplus food, thus reducing waste and promoting sustainable consumption. The initiative also supports local businesses by providing them with a platform to sell unsold items, which can help mitigate financial losses. The app’s expansion in New Zealand reflects a growing awareness and proactive approach to managing food waste, contributing to broader sustainability efforts.
