In a lawsuit, county officials in Honolulu stated that if emergency responders had been aware of the widespread cellphone outages during the peak of last summer’s devastating Maui wildfires, they would have used alternative methods to alert the public about the disaster.
The alerts that the county attempted to send to cellphones, warning people to evacuate immediately, were not received due to the outages.
