Massachusetts will hold its primary election on Tuesday, 2026, featuring a significant U.S. Senate race between incumbent Democrat Ed Markey and challenger Seth Moulton. Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and voters can check their polling place on the secretary of state’s website. Markey, who has held his Senate seat since 2013 and advocates for progressive initiatives like the Green New Deal, is seeking a third full term. Moulton, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and current Congressman, argues for a change, citing Markey’s long tenure in Congress since 1976. The winner will face Republican John Deaton in the general election. In other races, six Democrats are competing for Moulton’s vacated Congressional seat, while incumbent Rep. Stephen Lynch faces a challenge from attorney Patrick Roath. On the Republican side, businessman Mike Minogue is running against former MBTA chief Brian Shortsleeve for governor.

Why It Matters

The 2026 primary election in Massachusetts is crucial as it may significantly impact the political landscape in the state and beyond. This election features key positions, including the Senate seat currently held by Ed Markey, who has been a prominent figure in progressive politics. Additionally, the congressional primaries will determine new representatives for areas experiencing shifts in political representation, as incumbents face challengers. The outcomes of these races could influence party dynamics leading up to the general elections and shape legislative agendas at both the state and federal levels.
