A paddle-out memorial will take place this weekend at Scarborough Beach to honor Mark Lane, a renowned surfing figure in Western Australia who passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. Lane served as the chief executive officer of Surfing WA from 2010 until his death and previously held the same position from 2000 to 2006, as well as leading Surfing Australia from 2006 to 2009. His contributions to the surfing community included grassroots programs, elite coaching, and managing major events, and he was instrumental in raising significant funding for surfing initiatives. Lane was awarded life membership of Surfing Australia in 2023, recognizing over three decades of dedication to the sport and its community. Tributes have poured in from surfers and colleagues, underscoring his impact and legacy.

Why It Matters

Mark Lane’s passing is significant as he played a pivotal role in the development of surfing in Western Australia, helping to elevate the sport at both grassroots and elite levels. His advocacy for skin cancer awareness, following his own diagnosis in 2018, highlights the ongoing health challenges faced by surfers due to sun exposure. Lane’s leadership facilitated the establishment of key surfing events and the WA Surf Gallery, enriching the cultural fabric of the surfing community in the region. His contributions reflect broader trends in sports management, where leadership and community engagement are crucial for fostering growth and support within athletic disciplines.
