The number of shark attacks worldwide rose sharply to 105 in 2025, up from 88 the previous year, with Australia experiencing a significant increase and five fatalities. The U.S. recorded the highest number of cases at 25, including one fatality, while Florida accounted for 11 attacks. Most incidents involved swimming (46%) and surfing (32%), with the majority deemed unprovoked. Notably, a 12-year-old boy died after a shark attack in Sydney Harbour at the start of the new year.
