A 14-year-old student in Turkey carried out a tragic shooting at his middle school, resulting in the deaths of eight classmates and a teacher. This incident, which marks the second school shooting in Turkey within just two days, involved the student using firearms believed to belong to his father, a former police officer. Armed with five weapons and seven magazines concealed in a backpack, the shooter opened fire indiscriminately in two classrooms primarily occupied by fifth-grade students, aged 10 to 11. Following the attack, six other individuals sustained critical injuries. The Interior Minister of Turkey, Mustafa Ciftci, emphasized that the act was a personal attack rather than a terrorist incident. Additionally, the shooter reportedly took his own life during the chaos.

Why It Matters

This shooting highlights a disturbing trend of gun violence in Turkish schools, with two incidents occurring in rapid succession. The previous day’s attack by an 18-year-old gunman, who wounded over a dozen people before taking his own life, raises concerns about school safety and the accessibility of firearms in Turkey. Historically, Turkey has faced challenges related to gun control and violence, contributing to rising fears among parents and students regarding safety in educational environments. These incidents may also prompt discussions about mental health and preventive measures within schools.
