Man Sentenced to Life for Murdering Couple at Home

Derek Martin, 67, was found guilty of murdering his stepdaughter Chloe Bashford, 30, and her husband Josh Bashford, 33, in their Newhaven home on June 9, 2023. He received a life sentence with a minimum of 29 years after admitting to manslaughter but denying murder, claiming mental health issues influenced his actions. Martin attacked Chloe with a hammer and later stabbed Josh before attempting to clean the scene and pick up their children. Despite a history of depression, psychiatric experts suggested he experienced diminished responsibility at the time of the killings.
