NSRI rescuers responded to a drowning incident in Port Alfred on Sunday morning, where an inflatable boat capsized in the Kowie River Mouth. One man was recovered from the water but could not be resuscitated and was declared dead at the scene. His grandson, who survived, was found on the shoreline and is currently recovering under medical care. The Eastern Cape police have opened an inquest docket regarding the man’s death. The NSRI indicated that the boat may have capsized due to waves while attempting to exit the river. In a separate incident, the NSRI’s Gqeberha crew conducted a medical evacuation for a seafarer suffering from a medical condition on a bulk carrier in Algoa Bay, who is now recovering in hospital.

Why It Matters

Drowning incidents, particularly in coastal areas, highlight ongoing safety concerns related to recreational boating and water activities. The Kowie River Mouth is known for its challenging conditions, which can pose risks to boaters, especially in adverse weather. The NSRI and local authorities emphasize the importance of safety measures and awareness to prevent such tragedies. In addition, this incident underscores the role of emergency services in responding to maritime emergencies, which is critical for ensuring public safety along South Africa’s coastlines.
