A 37-year-old father of four, Carlos Cerasomma, died from choking on watermelon during an eating contest at the Sao Pedro Thermas Resort in Brazil, in front of his wife, Kimberly Santos. Competitors were encouraged to finish their portions before Carlos became unresponsive; he was later declared dead from asphyxiation. Kimberly criticized the resort for inadequate medical response and plans to take legal action, while the resort claims he was alive when taken to the hospital. Choking incidents, unfortunately, are not uncommon, with similar cases reported elsewhere.
