Rights group accuses Russian mercenaries of abuses against civilians in Mali

Human Rights Watch reported that Mali’s armed forces, supported by Russian mercenaries, have committed abuses against civilians since the withdrawal of the U.N. peacekeeping mission, including killing at least 32 civilians, kidnapping four others, and burning homes. Jihadi groups in the region have also executed civilians and displaced thousands, burning houses and looting livestock. Following the departure of French forces, the Malian junta turned to Russia’s Wagner Group for security assistance, leading to allegations of civilian casualties in raids and drone strikes.
