Malawi qualifies for Women’s World Cup; Nigeria faces potential elimination

Malawi has qualified for the Women’s World Cup for the first time, securing one of four spots allocated to African nations after a 2-1 victory over Ghana in the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarterfinals. Alongside Malawi, Algeria also booked its place in the tournament following its win over Ivory Coast. Meanwhile, Nigeria, which has participated in every Women’s World Cup since its inception in 1991, faces the possibility of missing out after losing 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarterfinals. Maéva Nyadjou’s first-half goal and nine saves by Cameroonian goalkeeper Michaely Bihina kept Nigeria from advancing. As Malawi prepares for its semifinal against Algeria, Nigeria’s path to the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil now hinges on winning a play-in match against South Africa on August 13.

Why It Matters

This is a historic moment for Malawi, which is ranked 153rd in FIFA’s rankings and has never before qualified for a major tournament. Their victory against Ghana, ranked 60th, highlights the growing competitiveness of women’s football in Africa. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s potential absence from the next World Cup marks the first time since the tournament’s launch that the team may not be present, signaling a shift in the dynamics of women’s football on the continent. The ongoing WAFCON tournament serves as a critical platform for African teams to secure their places in the global competition, with further qualification matches scheduled for later this year.
