London station to close for £20 million upgrade

London’s Waterloo East and Charing Cross train stations are scheduled to close for 22 days during the summer for essential upgrades, which include the installation of new tracks and improvements to platform safety. The main closure will occur from July 26 to August 16, 2025, with additional weekend closures before and after this period. During the closures, services will be redirected to other stations, including London Victoria, Cannon Street, Blackfriars, and London Bridge. Passengers are advised to check for changes, as some services may have altered timings or cancellations. The £20 million upgrade is necessary due to the aging infrastructure, with tracks last updated in the early 1990s, leading to reliability issues.

Why It Matters

The upgrades at Waterloo East and Charing Cross are part of a larger effort to modernize London’s rail infrastructure, which is critical for accommodating the rising number of passengers. In 2024/25, Charing Cross recorded nearly 19.7 million journeys, highlighting its importance in the transport network. The investment aims to address safety and reliability concerns, as the existing tracks have become increasingly prone to faults. Such upgrades are essential for maintaining efficient transport links in London, especially as commuter demand continues to grow.
