Alvin Hellerstein, a 92-year-old senior judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, has presided over high-profile cases involving former Presidents Bill Clinton, Nicolás Maduro, and Donald Trump. He rejected Trump’s attempts to remove a criminal case to federal court, but a Supreme Court ruling forced a reexamination of presidential immunity. Hellerstein also granted a temporary restraining order in a case challenging the deportation of Venezuelans and recently oversaw the trial of a woman convicted of defrauding JPMorgan Chase. Since 2014, he has been involved in matters related to the Maduro case, culminating in the recent appearance of the lead defendant in his court.
