Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have seized control of Bukavu, the second major city in the eastern DRC to fall under their control, following the capture of Goma in late January. Residents fled and looters took advantage as the rebels entered the city, with a border crossing to Rwanda closed and shops shuttered. The rebels, supported by Rwandan troops, are part of the numerous armed groups competing for control of valuable minerals in the region, prompting international concern and calls for a ceasefire and the return of Congolese authorities to Bukavu.
