Louisville women’s basketball 2026-27 season preview for Jeff Walz’s team

Returning to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 signals strong progress for the Louisville women’s basketball team, which improved its win total from 22 in 2024-25 to 29 in 2025-26. Head coach Jeff Walz mentioned that five players are returning, along with a verbal commitment from another, as the Cardinals achieved a program-first 11-0 start in the ACC, a 14-game winning streak, and an ACC Tournament championship appearance. However, the team will lose key players, including junior guard Skylar Jones and senior forward Laura Ziegler, an All-ACC first-team selection, to graduation. Despite these losses, Louisville is set to retain four starters and ACC Sixth Player of the Year Imari Berry, while freshman Grace Mbugua is expected to step up in the frontcourt. The Cardinals have also signed three recruits from the Class of 2026, including four-star guards Ariyana Cradle and Myah Epps, as well as Turkish forward Ayse Melek Demirer.

Why It Matters

The success of Louisville women’s basketball is indicative of a growing program that has made significant strides in recent seasons. With a record of 29 wins, the Cardinals not only showcased their strength within the ACC but also secured a higher seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022. The retention of nearly half of the team as sophomores and the addition of promising recruits suggest a continued upward trajectory. Historically, strong recruiting classes have been crucial for building competitive college basketball programs, which can lead to sustained success in tournaments like the NCAA.
