The popularity of audiobooks is rising, with daily listeners in the U.S. increasing from 3% in 2016 to 8% in 2023. While 51% of adults have listened to at least one audiobook, over 40% believe that listening doesn’t equate to reading. Experts note that both audiobooks and print reading engage key brain functions, though print reading is vital for skill development in children. The debate continues on whether audiobooks can fully replace traditional reading.
