Lions running back skips practice while seeking new contract

Jahmyr Gibbs, the Detroit Lions running back, missed the team’s first training camp practice on July 29. While no official reason was given for his absence, head coach Dan Campbell did not include Gibbs in his injury report prior to the session. Gibbs is currently negotiating a new contract. Campbell acknowledged the situation, indicating that both parties are engaged in discussions and that they will proceed as needed. The Lions exercised Gibbs’ fifth-year option in April, extending his contract through the 2027 season, which will pay him $14.293 million, reflecting his Pro Bowl status. Drafted 12th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gibbs has quickly become a top player, averaging over 1,200 scrimmage yards per season and is expected to have an expanded role in the offense under new coordinator Drew Petzing following the trade of David Montgomery.

Why It Matters

Gibbs’ absence at training camp highlights the ongoing contract negotiations that are significant for both the player and the franchise. The Lions have invested heavily in Gibbs by exercising his fifth-year option, which aligns his salary with the franchise tag for running backs. Historically, players in similar situations often see performance incentives tied to their contracts, which can impact team dynamics and future salary cap decisions. The Lions’ strategy to utilize Gibbs as a primary offensive weapon reflects the trend in the NFL of maximizing the value of high-draft picks, especially those who have demonstrated their abilities as both runners and receivers.
