Three lions die from suspected heatstroke at zoo in Japan

Three lions at Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo have died, likely from heatstroke, as high temperatures and humidity affect the animals. Three lionesses—Mugi, Ichigo, and Luena—died within a week, while others are receiving treatment for symptoms like decreased activity and loss of appetite. Japan has recently experienced record-breaking temperatures, with parts of the country reaching over 40 degrees Celsius, leading to increased hospitalizations due to heat-related conditions. The zoo has closed the lion enclosure and is implementing measures such as water sprays and fans to mitigate the heat’s impact on the remaining lions. Animal rights group PETA criticized zoos for confining animals, arguing that they deprive them of a natural habitat.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the increasing challenges wildlife face due to climate change, particularly in regions experiencing extreme weather fluctuations. Japan’s summer heat is becoming more severe, contributing to a rise in heat-related illnesses and fatalities among both humans and animals. The country already sees about 1,300 heat-related deaths annually and aims to reduce this figure by half by 2030. The deaths of the lions underscore the urgent need for improved animal welfare practices in zoos, especially during extreme weather events.
