Letlow and Fleming move to runoff in Louisiana GOP Senate primary

CBS News projects that Rep. Julia Letlow and Louisiana state Treasurer John Fleming will advance to a runoff in the Senate Republican primary, eliminating incumbent GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy. Cassidy, who is 68, was one of seven Senate Republicans to vote for former President Trump’s impeachment following the January 6 Capitol attack. Letlow, 45, gained prominence as the first Republican woman elected to Congress from Louisiana in 2021 after winning a special election. She has criticized Cassidy for his perceived disloyalty to the GOP and has gained Trump’s endorsement for her campaign. Fleming, who has also aligned himself with Trump, described himself as “the only conservative MAGA Republican” in the race. Cassidy has faced criticism from both Letlow and Fleming for his past support of certain policies, while the National Republican Senatorial Committee backed Cassidy as he sought a third Senate term. The primary reflects Trump’s ongoing influence in the Republican Party amidst a largely Republican electorate in Louisiana.

Why It Matters

This primary race is significant as it highlights the shifting dynamics within the Republican Party, particularly the influence of Trump-backed candidates. Cassidy’s impeachment vote and subsequent actions have positioned him against the current party base, which remains loyal to Trump. Historically, Louisiana is a solidly Republican state, with the last Democratic senator elected in 2008. The outcome of this primary could shape the GOP’s direction in the state and influence the party’s strategies in upcoming elections, particularly in light of Trump’s continued impact on Republican politics.
