Kurds in the new Syria want to preserve the cultural rights they gained in years of war

Kurds in Syria, marginalized during Assad rule, are now asserting cultural gains in the post-Assad transition, with Kurdish language and traditions being revived. Negotiations with new authorities in Damascus for decentralization are ongoing, while conflict with Turkish-backed rebels threatens Kurdish autonomy and forces thousands to flee. Kurdish leaders seek equality and rights in a secular, decentralized Syria, as they continue to fight against IS and Turkish-backed factions to preserve their achievements amidst ongoing challenges and displacement.
