The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has completed a search related to the 1996 disappearance of Kristin Smart at a property in Arroyo Grande, but did not recover her remains. This search occurred at the home of Susan Flores, mother of Paul Flores, who was convicted of Smart’s murder in 2022 and is currently appealing his conviction. Investigators utilized ground-penetrating radar and soil testing, believing human remains may have been present at the site at some point. Sheriff Ian Parkinson expressed hope that scientific evidence would lead to more findings. The Smart family remains hopeful and appreciates the ongoing efforts of law enforcement.

Why It Matters

Kristin Smart, a California Polytechnic State University student, disappeared in 1996, leading to one of the state’s most enduring unsolved cases. In 2022, Paul Flores was convicted of her murder, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn extensive media attention and community involvement over the decades. The sheriff’s office has conducted multiple searches over the years, including earlier efforts in 2020, reflecting the persistent commitment to resolving the case. As investigations continue, the Smart family’s ongoing advocacy highlights the emotional impact and the necessity of closure in cases of missing persons.
