The murder of
a 22-year-old model, university student, and social media influencer, María José Estupiñán, has sparked outrage in Colombia after she was shot outside her home in Cúcuta on May 15. Women’s rights advocates criticize authorities for failing to protect her, as she had reported her ex-partner for domestic violence and had recently won a court case against him, making him the prime suspect. Her murder, alongside that of another influencer, has raised alarms about the risks faced by women in public roles and highlighted ongoing issues of femicide in the region.
