Fuad Awale, an Islamist double murderer, was awarded £7,500 and the taxpayer must cover his £234,000 legal fees after the High Court ruled that his human rights were breached due to over a year in solitary confinement. Awale, serving life for executing two teenagers in 2011, had previously taken a prison officer hostage while demanding the release of extremist cleric Abu Qatada. The court found his treatment violated Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights regarding the right to a private life. Justice Secretary David Lammy indicated that the government is reviewing legal changes to prevent similar cases from undermining national security.
