Jockey Junior Alvarado, who rode Sovereignty to victory at the Kentucky Derby, has been fined $62,000 for exceeding the allowed number of strikes with his riding crop during the race, violating the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority’s rules. Alvarado struck the horse eight times, which is two more than the permitted six, resulting in a penalty that includes a two-day suspension and a fine based on his winnings. He now has 30 days to pay the fine, with the option to appeal the decision.
