Gen Z nearly twice as likely to take sick days as over-55s

More than 80% of workers under 25 have taken a sick day in the last year when they were not genuinely ill, according to a recent online survey of 2,123 people conducted by Merlin Strategy for Britain’s Centre for Social Justice. In contrast, only 43% of employees aged 55 to 64 reported the same behavior. Additionally, 39% of younger workers admitted to calling in sick at least five times in the past year despite being able to work, compared to just 10% of older employees. These findings indicate a growing trend of younger generations, particularly Gen Z, exhibiting lower workplace commitment compared to their older counterparts. Employers have expressed concerns that younger individuals often leave school unprepared for the workforce, complicating hiring processes for inexperienced staff.

Why It Matters

The trend of younger employees taking more sick days than older colleagues raises concerns about workplace engagement and commitment among Gen Z. Historically, younger workers have faced different economic challenges, including job market instability and rising living costs, which may influence their work ethic and career decisions. Research suggests that an increasing number of young adults are delaying traditional life milestones, such as moving out of their family homes and establishing stable careers. This shift in behavior could reshape employer expectations and workforce dynamics in the coming years, emphasizing the need for adaptable management strategies to accommodate the evolving attitudes of new entrants in the labor market.
