UK and five nations condemn Iranian attacks on oil fields

Keir Starmer has strongly condemned Iran’s recent attacks on oil and gas infrastructure and shipping, which have contributed to a surge in energy prices, now exceeding $119 a barrel. The strikes, which targeted an energy complex in Qatar, were reportedly a response to Israeli actions against Iran’s South Pars gas field. In a joint statement with leaders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan, Starmer called for a de-escalation of tensions and condemned the attacks on civilian vessels and infrastructure in the Gulf. He urged Iran to halt its aggressive actions and comply with UN Security Council resolution 2817, which condemns Iran’s actions against neighboring countries. Starmer emphasized the UK’s intention to avoid being drawn into a wider conflict while exploring a coordinated response with international partners to secure safe passage through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, with about 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. Iran’s military actions and threats to block this route pose significant risks to global energy security and economic stability. The recent escalation in hostilities follows a pattern of Iranian retaliation against perceived foreign aggression, particularly from the US and Israel, highlighting the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region. The response from global leaders underscores the importance of diplomatic efforts to mitigate conflict and maintain open trade routes essential for the world economy.
