On October 7, 2022, Crystal Sale arrived at the hospital to find her daughter, Katlyn Lyon Montgomery, unconscious and in critical condition due to a violent assault, not a drug overdose as initially thought. Katlyn’s sisters, Sherry Cox and Tina Hopkins, rallied to support the family, with Sherry caring for Katlyn’s daughter, Milani. Investigators discovered significant injuries on Katlyn’s neck and identified a charging cord as a potential weapon, but DNA evidence was compromised when first responders allowed the family to clean the scene. After 29 hours of unsuccessful resuscitation efforts, Katlyn was declared brain dead, leaving her family heartbroken.
