The UK’s newspaper front pages have been dominated by the shock announcement from Kate, the Princess of Wales, about her cancer diagnosis. Messages of support and criticism for those who speculated about her health are featured prominently.
Following tests after major abdominal surgery in January, Kate revealed on Friday that she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy due to the presence of cancer. The 42-year-old wife of Prince William called the discovery a “huge shock”.
This news adds to the health challenges facing the British royal family, as King Charles is also receiving treatment for cancer.
All of Saturday’s newspapers featured Kate’s announcement, along with a photo of her delivering a video message filmed at Windsor on Wednesday.
The Sun tabloid’s headline “KATE, YOU ARE NOT ALONE” highlighted the outpouring of love and support for her, while the Daily Mirror focused on “KATE REVEALS CANCER SHOCK” and her discussion with her children about the news.
Quoting Kate as saying “Cancer came as huge shock,” The Daily Telegraph also noted her assurance that she will be okay.
The Daily Mail criticized online trolls for speculating about Kate’s health, questioning how they feel now.
Support poured in for Kate from King Charles, Prince Harry, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, and US President Joe Biden.
Sunak praised Kate’s bravery and condemned the unfair treatment she has received from certain sections of the media and on social platforms.
Internationally, Kate’s diagnosis made headlines, with the New York Times highlighting the uncertainty facing the UK royals due to the health concerns of both the King and Kate.
Charles, who became King in September 2022, underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate in January at the same hospital as Kate. Buckingham Palace announced in February that the 75-year-old King would undergo cancer treatment, leading to the postponement of his public royal duties.
