Whangārei SH1 roundabout project to enable 3,000 new homes

A new roundabout on State Highway 1 in Whangārei’s north is progressing, paving the way for future development, which may take up to 30 years to fully realize. The Springs Flat roundabout is expected to facilitate the construction of 2,000 to 3,000 new homes in Te Kamo East, along with a highway service center that will feature a petrol station, food outlets, and a supermarket. This project, led by the Whangārei District Council, is estimated to cost $27 million, with $10.3 million sourced from the Government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund. The development includes new pedestrian crossing lights, access to undeveloped residential land via a bridge on Gillingham Rd, and a shared walking and cycling path that will connect to the Kamo Shared Path.

Why It Matters

The construction of the Springs Flat roundabout is significant as it represents a long-term investment in infrastructure that will support regional growth in Whangārei. By enabling access to a large area of undeveloped land, it lays the groundwork for substantial residential and commercial development, addressing housing shortages in the area. The project is part of broader efforts to enhance transportation and connectivity in Northland, which has seen increased demand for housing and services in recent years. This aligns with national strategies aimed at accelerating infrastructure projects to stimulate economic growth and improve living conditions in growing communities.
