What You Need to Know
• Employers announced 33,429 job cuts in July 2026, a 46% decrease from the previous year.
• The four-week average of initial jobless claims fell below 200,000 for the first time since October 2022.
• Artificial intelligence accounted for 33% of layoffs in July, primarily affecting the technology sector.

In July 2026, employers in the United States reported 33,429 layoffs, marking the lowest level in two years, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. This figure represents a 46% decline compared to July 2025. Additionally, the four-week average of initial jobless claims dropped below 200,000 for the first time since October 2022, indicating a stable labor market. Andy Challenger, Chief Revenue Officer at Challenger, Gray & Christmas, noted that layoffs are primarily occurring in the technology sector, with artificial intelligence being a significant factor, contributing to 33% of job cuts. Despite these layoffs, the labor market remains balanced, as recently laid-off workers are finding new jobs at a pace that matches job creation. The upcoming Labor Department report is expected to show a payroll gain of 97,500 for July, following a weaker-than-expected addition of 57,000 jobs in June.

Why It Matters

This data highlights the current state of the U.S. labor market amid ongoing economic challenges, including inflation and technological advancements. The significant drop in layoffs suggests resilience in employment, even as artificial intelligence continues to reshape job availability, particularly in entry-level corporate positions. The unemployment rate remains low at 4.2%, but some groups, such as recent graduates, face increased competition for jobs. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for assessing the broader economic landscape and the impact of technology on employment.
