Judge Shortens Prison Sentence Based on Defendant’s Race
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A former university football player, Omogbolahan Jegede, was sentenced to two years in prison for sexually assaulting two women at St. Francis Xavier University. The judge, Justice Frank Hoskins, noted that mitigating factors, including Jegede’s race and cultural pressures, influenced the sentence, which was lower than the Crown’s request. Jegede choked one victim and forced oral sex on another, with the judge emphasizing the violent nature of the crimes. In addition to prison time, he received three years of probation, contingent on progress in counseling.
