John Lewis recalls products due to asbestos contamination

John Lewis has announced a recall of over a dozen doorstops and draught excluders due to possible asbestos contamination. These products were sold between January 31, 2021, and June 11, 2026, and include novelty designs such as a snowman and a llama. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) reported that the marble chips used in these items may contain asbestos, a material linked to serious health risks, including lung damage and cancer. Customers are advised to stop using these products immediately and keep them away from children. John Lewis offers full refunds, and consumers can return the items to any store without a receipt or inquire about safe disposal through their local council.

Why It Matters

Asbestos is a banned substance in many countries due to its severe health hazards, leading to chronic diseases such as asbestosis and various cancers. The recall of these doorstops is part of a broader trend, with 166 products withdrawn from UK shelves over the last six months due to asbestos concerns. This incident highlights ongoing issues within the retail industry regarding product safety and the importance of strict compliance with the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. The situation underscores the need for vigilance in monitoring materials used in consumer goods to prevent potential health risks.
