Jobless baker creates jobs and trains others during lockdown

Emmanuel Mothae founded Bots Bakers during the Covid-19 pandemic, inspired by a desire to create a bakery while unemployed. Starting with a vision for affordable bread, Mothae conducted thorough research and received funding in 2021, allowing the bakery to open in 2022. Bots Bakers has since employed nearly 20 people, predominantly young individuals, and launched the Thusa Motjha skills development programme, which has helped many participants secure permanent jobs at major supermarkets. Mothae aims to expand Bots Bakers into a one-stop shop, seeking investors and partners to realize this vision, despite current operational challenges and a recent move to a new location.

Why It Matters

Bots Bakers exemplifies grassroots entrepreneurship in response to economic hardship, especially during the pandemic when many faced unemployment. The establishment of the Thusa Motjha programme highlights the importance of skills development in addressing youth unemployment, a critical issue in many communities. By securing permanent employment for 80% of programme participants, Mothae’s initiative not only supports local economic growth but also fosters community resilience. Expanding into a one-stop shop could further enhance job creation and improve access to essential goods in under-served areas, contributing to local economic stability.
