Watch: North Shore homeowner fears raging backyard river, council says it can’t pipe stormwater
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A North Shore man, Arturo Gatmaitan, is concerned that an open stormwater drain near his Bayview property poses a safety risk to his children, as the water can rise dangerously during heavy rain. Although Gatmaitan has raised this issue with Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters department since 2022, officials state the drain cannot be enclosed, and he was aware of the overland flood plain when purchasing the property.

Explain It To Me Like I’m 5: A man is worried that a big open drain near his house is dangerous for his kids, but the people in charge say they can’t cover it up and that he knew about it when he bought the house.
