Japan has been chosen to host the Women’s Basketball World Cup in 2030, while France will host the Men’s Basketball World Cup in 2031, as announced by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The women’s tournament will take place in Tokyo from November 26 to December 8, 2030, marking Japan’s first time hosting this event. The men’s competition is scheduled for August 29 to September 14, 2031, across Lille, Lyon, and Paris. Both countries have previously hosted the Olympic Games, with Japan hosting the 2020 Games and France set to welcome athletes for the 2024 Olympics. FIBA secretary-general Andreas Zagklis highlighted Japan and France as beloved basketball destinations. This will be the first time France hosts a Basketball World Cup event.

Why It Matters

The selection of Japan and France for these prestigious tournaments underscores the growing global popularity of basketball. Japan previously hosted the Men’s Basketball World Cup in 2006 but will be hosting the Women’s World Cup for the first time, reflecting a broader trend towards promoting women’s sports. France has a rich basketball history and has produced many top players and teams, contributing significantly to the sport’s development. The upcoming tournaments are expected to boost local economies and enhance the basketball culture in both nations.
