Japan seizes Chinese vessel and arrests captain

Japanese authorities have arrested the captain of a Chinese fishing vessel for allegedly evading an inspection in Japan’s exclusive economic zone, marking the first such incident involving a Chinese vessel since 2022. The 47-year-old captain failed to comply with the order to stop and was apprehended off Nagasaki Prefecture. This incident could escalate tensions between Japan and China, which have historical territorial disputes. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary emphasized ongoing efforts to combat illegal fishing by foreign vessels.
