The upcoming Clayface movie is confirmed by James Gunn to take place before Superman in the DC Universe (DCU) timeline, marking it as a significant addition to the series. Gunn addressed a fan inquiry about the film’s chronological placement, stating it is “the first DCU film out of chronological order.” He added that while the standalone narrative is crucial, it is also “very connected” to the broader DCU storyline. The film stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, an actor who gains the ability to morph into anyone following a violent transformation. Described as a horror film, it is penned by Mike Flanagan, known for his unsettling storytelling in projects like The Haunting of Hill House. This unique direction suggests that Clayface could play a pivotal role in shaping future DCU narratives.
Why It Matters
The placement of Clayface before Superman in the DCU timeline is notable as it establishes a foundation for interconnected stories within the franchise. Historically, films in the DCU have followed a more traditional superhero format, but this new direction toward a horror-themed narrative may attract a different audience. With Supergirl set to debut after Clayface, the film could introduce themes and characters that influence subsequent DCU releases. As the DCU continues to evolve, integrating varied genres, Clayface represents a potential shift in storytelling that could redefine how superhero narratives are approached.
