Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is said to be covering the funeral expenses for a high school football player in Texas who was tragically shot and killed over the weekend.
Jarvon Coles, a student at North Shore High School in the Houston area, was fatally shot at a party in what is believed to be a drive-by shooting on Saturday night.
Hurts, who attended rival Channelview High School, is reportedly taking care of the funeral costs, as per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
Authorities responding to a report of underage drinking at a short-term rental property in Humble, Texas found Coles in the backyard with a gunshot wound to his chest, according to KHOU.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez informed the outlet that one or more shooters deliberately fired towards the house party from a vehicle a block away.
Approximately 50-60 individuals were present at the party, as stated in the report.
Braxton Coles, the victim’s grandfather and guardian, shared with KHOU that his grandson had a 4.1 GPA, had received acceptance from 15 different colleges, and was looking forward to playing football at Lamar University after a recent campus visit.
The last time they saw each other, Jarvon Coles informed his grandfather that he was going to “hang out with a couple of buddies.”
“Parents, please keep your kids close. No matter how hard you try, you can’t save them,” the grandfather advised other parents in a message to the outlet.Â
“Jarvon was a wonderful human being, always with a smile on his face, never involved in anything negative, or having any conflicts with anyone,” mentioned Coles’ former football teammate, DaMeko Williams.
Kyle Herridge, an assistant offensive line coach at North Shore, paid tribute to Coles on X.
“The impact he had on and off the field in our program is immeasurable,” Herridge tweeted.
“Truly an incredible human being. Prayers are needed for his family, our student athletes, our staff, and the entire North Shore community. Rest easy, Jarvon Coles.”
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is requesting any information that may help bring justice for Coles’ untimely death.
