NEW DELHI: J K Rowling caused a stir on X when she made comments denying that the Nazis had “burnt books on trans healthcare and research”. Her remarks were in response to a post claiming that the Nazis had destroyed books on trans healthcare and research, questioning why she was supporting their gender ideology. Rowling expressed disbelief at the source of the post, stating, “I just… how? How did you type this out and press send without thinking ‘I should maybe check my source for this, because it might’ve been a fever dream’?”

These comments prompted reactions from X users, including gender and tech expert Alejandra Caraballo, who referenced a study on how the Nazis targeted transgender individuals. The post detailed an incident on May 6, 1933, where a Nazi student group raided the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin, looting its library and archives. Subsequently, the stolen materials were destroyed in public book burnings organized throughout Germany.

In response to these claims, Rowling disputed the notion that transgender individuals were the Nazis’ first victims or that all research on trans healthcare was destroyed in 1930s Germany, accusing Alejandra of lying. When confronted with the assertion that all research had been lost due to the Nazis’ actions, Rowling made a sarcastic remark referencing biblical texts.

This controversy followed Rowling’s previous post on UK Mother’s Day, which also stirred up debate online.
