Aetna to cover IVF for same-sex couples in national settlement.

Mara Berton and June Higginbotham, a lesbian couple from California, fought a class action lawsuit against Aetna for denying fertility treatment insurance benefits to same-sex couples. In a landmark settlement, Aetna is now required to cover fertility treatments for LGBTQ members. A new California law will also expand access to mandated fertility benefits starting in January. The policy change follows a case where LGBTQ individuals were denied coverage for artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, prompting a change in the medical definition of infertility to include LGBTQ individuals without partners.
