Italy’s Lovers’ Arch Falls into Sea on Valentine’s Day

A beloved natural rock formation known as the ‘Lovers’ Arch’ in Puglia, Italy, collapsed on Valentine’s Day due to severe weather conditions, prompting local mayor Maurizio Cisternino to describe it as “an unwanted Valentine’s Day gift” that harms tourism. The coastal region has suffered from continuous heavy rain and strong winds, raising concerns about coastal erosion and damage to other areas. This year’s storms have caused over a billion euros in destruction across southern Italy, including evacuations in Niscemi due to landslides. The arch was a popular destination for tourists and marriage proposals, making its loss particularly significant.
