Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani met with Syria’s new ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus, discussing the easing of sanctions imposed on the country under the previous regime. Tajani also met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and expressed a desire to form a high-level delegation for a foreign tour of European countries. The European Union is considering lifting sanctions on Syria if the new government takes steps towards inclusivity and protection of minorities, with Tajani also planning to announce an initial development aid package for the country.
