Water expert Jad Isaac tells Al Jazeera that Palestinians are trapped buying 100 million cubic metres (26 billion gallons) of water annually from Israel while their own springs are seized to force displacement.
A systemic imbalance
In the occupied West Bank, Palestinians face severe water shortages due to Israeli settlers diverting water from traditional sources, creating a crisis termed “water apartheid.” With settlers consuming up to seven times more water, many Palestinians receive as little as 15 liters per day, well below global standards. The Oslo Accords have compounded this issue, forcing Palestinians to purchase water from Israel, leading to what Isaac describes as “slow displacement” of their communities. Israeli government officials have publicly supported these actions, further restricting Palestinian access to water resources.
