Elon Musk’s Starlink is reportedly providing free internet service to users in Iran during a communications blackout amid widespread antigovernment protests. Despite lacking a license to operate in the country, Starlink’s terminals, smuggled in since 2022, have become vital for sharing information about the protests and death tolls, which activists claim exceed 2,500. The current blackout is noted to be more extensive than previous ones, with the Iranian government actively jamming Starlink signals. As protests escalate, the situation highlights the critical role of satellite communications in circumventing state-controlled media.
