Oman should prioritize Gulf cooperation, U.S. relations, and freedom over Iran’s toll scheme

In recent discussions regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Oman has emerged as a significant yet understated player amid tensions involving Iran. While Oman has engaged with the United States as a mediator, it has also shown willingness to consider Iran’s proposals for tolls on shipping through the waterway. However, analysts argue that aligning with Iran could jeopardize Oman’s economic progress, which has recently seen a notable improvement in its global economic freedom ranking, moving up 19 places to 39th. Under the Oman Vision 2040 framework, the country has implemented reforms that have strengthened its economy, reduced debt levels, and attracted foreign investment, resulting in a GDP per capita estimated at $21,645. In contrast, Iran’s economic situation continues to decline, with inflation rates soaring to around 50% and a GDP per capita of just $3,415.

Why It Matters

Oman’s strategic position near the Strait of Hormuz is crucial as it is a critical route for global oil shipments. The country has made significant advancements in economic reforms that have positioned it as a stable and attractive partner for international trade. On the other hand, Iran faces severe economic challenges, including high inflation and unemployment, stemming from systemic mismanagement. By maintaining independence from Iran’s economic strategies, Oman can leverage its growth to enhance regional cooperation and stability, especially in light of recent unity among Gulf Cooperation Council members.
