An Israeli air strike has killed Alireza Tangsiri, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy, according to Israel’s defence minister. The operation targeted Tangsiri and other senior naval officers, with Defence Minister Israel Katz stating that Tangsiri was responsible for blocking the Strait of Hormuz. This comes amid a series of Israeli assassinations of top Iranian officials since the US-Israel war on Iran began on February 28.
Why It Matters
The killing of Alireza Tangsiri marks another significant blow to Iran, which has already seen multiple military commanders eliminated in Israeli attacks. The targeting of key Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and security chief Ali Larijani, underscores the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial waterway for global oil shipments, and any disruptions caused by the conflict could have far-reaching economic implications.
